NGC 4516 is a spiral dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is an estimated 39 million light years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across. The galaxy is listed as part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under catalog number VVC 1479 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4501 , IC 3453 , IC 3476 , IC 3478 .
The object was discovered on April 8, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7-inch mirror telescope.
