NGC 4538 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is an estimated 205 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1576 , but is too far away for that.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4505 , NGC 4527 , NGC 4544 , IC 3474 .
The object was discovered on March 22, 1865 by the astronomer Albert Marth .
