NGC 4551 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E2 in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 50 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 25,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VVC 1630 . Together with NGC 4550, it forms the optical galaxy pair Holm 422 . In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4550 , NGC 4552 , IC 3574 , IC 3586 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 17, 1784 .
