NGC 4526 = NGC 4560 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 25 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter. Together with twelve other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4442 group ( LGG 288 ) and is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1535 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4518 , NGC 4535 , NGC 4570 , IC 3521 .

The supernovae SN 1969E and SN 1994D ( type Ia ) were observed here.

The object was discovered on April 13, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
