IC 3521 is an irregular dwarf galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type IBm in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 70 million light years from the Milky Way and about 10,000 light years in diameter. Together with twelve other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4442 group ( LGG 288 ) and is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1575 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4526 , NGC 4532 , NGC 4570 , IC 3591 .
The object was discovered by Arnold Schwassmann on November 8, 1899 .
