IC 3522 is an irregular dwarf galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type IBm in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 28 million light years from the Milky Way , about 10,000 light years in diameter, and listed as part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under catalog number VVC 1585 .
The galaxies NGC 4523 , NGC 4540 , IC 800 , IC 3534 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Royal Harwood Frost on May 7, 1904 .
