NGC 4540 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 56 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years across. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1588 . Together with IC 3528 , it forms the galaxy pair Holm 421 . The galaxies NGC 4523 , IC 800 , IC 3519 are located in the same area of ​​the sky .

The object was discovered on March 21, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7 inch reflector telescope.
