NGC 4536 is a bar-spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation and large-area star formation regions of the Hubble type SAB (rs) bc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 77 million light years from the Milky Way and has a disk diameter of around 180,000 ly. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1562 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4527 , NGC 4533 , NGC 4544 , IC 3474 .
The object was discovered on January 24, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
