NGC 4553 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0-a in the constellation Centaur in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 132 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on April 22, 1835 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflecting telescope.
