NGC 4564 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E6 in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 49 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light-years across. Listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VVC 1664 .
The galaxies NGC 4567 , NGC 4568 , IC 3542 , IC 3573 are located in the same area of the sky .
The Type Ia supernova SN 1961H was observed here.
The object was discovered on March 15, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel .
