NGC 4583 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 310 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years across.
The object was discovered by William Herschel on January 2, 1786 .
