NGC 4601 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Centaur in the southern sky . It is an estimated 135 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years across.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4603 , NGC 4616 , NGC 4622 , NGC 4650 .

The object was discovered on June 8, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflecting telescope , who said it was "extremely faint, large, round, pretty suddenly a little brighter in the middle. The first of two “(the second galaxy is NGC 4603 ).
