NGC 4623 is a 11.9 mag bright, lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble-type SB0 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 78 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter . She is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1913 .
The galaxies NGC 4598 , NGC 4612 , IC 3617 , IC 3719 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on April 13, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflecting telescope, who described it as "F, pL, iF, r".
