NGC 4612 is an 11.5 mag bright lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 76 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 60,000 ly. The galaxy is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VVC 1883 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4588 , NGC 4623 , IC 3617 , IC 3733 .
The object was discovered on January 23, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vS".
