NGC 4603 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation Centaurus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 108 million light years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxy is a member of the Centaurus Galaxy Cluster . The local group , to which our Milky Way also belongs, is approaching this galaxy cluster at a speed of about 1.5 million kilometers per hour , attracted by its gravity .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4601 , NGC 4616 , NGC 4622 , NGC 4650 .
The type II supernova SN 2008cn was observed here.
The object was discovered on June 8, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
