NGC 4598 is a 12.6 likes bright lenticular galaxy of Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 85 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light-years across . She is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1827 .
The galaxies NGC 4623 , IC 3617 , IC 3666 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on April 15, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as extremely faint, very large and somewhat brighter towards the center ("eF. VL. LbM." Extremely faint, very large, a little brighter in the middle ).
