NGC 4599 is a 12.7 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 78 million light-years away from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light-years in diameter .
The galaxy NGC 4581 is located in the same area of ​​the sky .

The object was discovered on February 22nd, 1786 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which they named "vF, vS".
