NGC 4596 is a 10.4 mag bright lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 82 million light-years away from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light-years in diameter . Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with NGC 4608 . She is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1813 .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 3607 , IC 3633 , IC 3634 , IC 3638 .

The object was discovered on March 15, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “vB pL r near two bright stars”.
