NGC 4581 is an elliptical cD galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E4 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 78 million light years from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxy NGC 4599 is located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on April 20, 1882 by Edward Singleton Holden .
