NGC 4597 is a 12 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 42 million light years from the Milky Way and about 25,000 light years across .
The galaxies NGC 4593 , NGC 4602 , NGC 4604 , IC 804 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on February 22nd, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "F, vL, bM".
