NGC 4617 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Canes Venatici on the northern sky . It is an estimated 211 million light years from the Milky Way and about 180,000 light years in diameter .
The supernovae SN 2005ab (Type II) and SN 2007ss ( Type Ia ) were observed here.
The object was discovered by William Herschel on February 9, 1788 .
