NGC 4636 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E2 with active galaxies core in the constellation virgin on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 38 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter. Together with 126 other galaxies it is considered a member of the NGC 4472 group ( LGG 292 ) and is listed under the catalog number VVC 1939 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4600 , NGC 4624 , NGC 4643 .

The supernovae SN 1939A (Type Ia) and SN 2020ue were observed here.

The object was discovered on February 23, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “pB pL iF r”.
