NGC 4659 is a lenticular dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Haar der Berenike. It is estimated to be 20 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 15,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VVC 1999 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4639 , NGC 4654 , IC 3735 , IC 3742 .
The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which it labeled “F. vS. R. lbM. r. ”described.
