NGC 4683 is a 12.8 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / SB0 in the constellation Centaur in the southern sky . It is an estimated 152 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4672 , NGC 4677 , NGC 4696 , NGC 4706 .

The object was discovered on June 8, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, which it labeled “eF, S, R, vgbM, 1 ′; Nf a small star ”.
