NGC 4692 = NGC 4702 is a 12.7 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type "E0" in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 358 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 135,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4670 , NGC 4673 , NGC 4721 , NGC 4728 , among others .
The object was discovered twice; first on April 11, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflecting telescope , who described it as "F, S" (listed as NGC 4692); then on March 4, 1867 by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest , who called it "Doubtless a very small, very much compressed cluster" (listed as NGC 4702).
