NGC 4689 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 70 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under catalog number VCC 2058 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4659 , NGC 4752 , IC 3735 , IC 3742 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 12, 1784 .
