NGC 4685 is a 12.7 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is an estimated 302 million light years from the Milky Way and about 180,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 3744 , IC 3766 , IC 3784 , IC 3785 .
The object was discovered on April 27, 1785 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, vS, resolvable".
