NGC 4666 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 65 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 90,000 ly.
The system is a so-called starburst galaxy , a galaxy in which a particularly large number of new stars are currently emerging . At such high rates of star formation occurs when galaxies each other by gravity influence , which in this case including through NGC 4668 happens.
Together with NGC 4632 and NGC 4668 it forms the small galaxy group LGG 299. In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4642 , NGC 4653 .
The supernovae SN 1965H (Type-IIP) and ASASSN -14lp ( Type-Ia ) were observed here.
The object was discovered by William Herschel on February 22, 1784 .
