NGC 4654 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBcd in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 45 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years across. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1987 . In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4620 , NGC 4639 , NGC 4659 , IC 3742 .

The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .

IC 3708 describes an H-II region in this galaxy, which the astronomer Arnold Schwassmann discovered on September 18, 1900 and received an entry in the index catalog .
