NGC 4643 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 56 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light-years across.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 4636 .
The object was discovered on January 24, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope , who described it as "vB pL lE GmbH, 2'long, 1.5 'broad".
