Edmund "Eddi" Erlemann (born January 31, 1935 in Krefeld ; † November 4, 2015 in Mönchengladbach ) was a German socially committed Roman Catholic priest, provost of Mönchengladbach Minster and founder of the Volksverein Foundation.

Life

Erlemann was born on January 31, 1935 in Krefeld as the third of four children. After he had been evacuated to Aalen due to the war from 1943 to 1946 , he graduated from high school in Krefeld in 1954 at Moltkeplatz . After studying theology and philosophy in Frankfurt am Main , he was ordained a priest on March 12, 1960 in Aachen. From 1968 to 1988 he was regional pastor and regional dean in the Mönchengladbach region. From 1970 to 2003 he was pastor of St. Mariae Himmelfahrt in Mönchengladbach. The commitment to social issues was evident in the cooperation in social clubs and organizations. In 1975 he became chairman of the “Wohlfahrt” eV association in Mönchengladbach, and since 2012 he has been honorary chairman there. Erlemann had been a partner and chairman of the advisory board in the Mönchengladbach Volksverein, the non-profit society against unemployment, since 1983 . From 1984 to 2003 he was provost of the Gladbach Minster.

From 1995 to 2006 he headed the project group “Church and Workers” in the diocese of Aachen . In 1997 Erlemann was heavily involved in founding the “Foundation for the Mönchengladbach People's Association”.

Erlemann died on November 4, 2015 in Mönchengladbach. At his own request, he was buried in the crypt of the Brandt Chapel on Rudolphstrasse, directly under the workbench that he had set up in the chapel in place of the altar years earlier.

  • 1985 Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his commitment to the unemployed
  • 1997 City plaque of the city of Mönchengladbach for special services to the social tradition of the city of Mönchengladbach
  • 1998 Theodor Hespers plaque for his services to freedom and human dignity
  • 2011 In a reader survey by the Rheinische Post, Erlemann was chosen from 50 suggested Mönchengladbach personalities as “Mönchengladbach's best”.
  • 2016 On September 24th, the square in front of the City Church was officially inaugurated as Edmund-Erlemann-Platz with a ceremony and an exhibition "50 years of the priestly life of Edmund Erlemann" in the Christ Church
