NGC 4622 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sa in the constellation Centaurus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 187 million light years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4601 , NGC 4603 , NGC 4616 , NGC 4650 .

As American astronomers have discovered, the galaxy rotates with its spiral arms ahead, which is a rarity in the universe . Because normally the galaxies drag their spiral arms behind them. Inside this galaxy there is also a spiral arm that behaves normally. This peculiar behavior probably stems from a collision with another galaxy.

The supernova SN 2001jx was observed here.

The object was discovered on June 5, 1834 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
