NGC 4640 (also NGC 4640A ) is a 13.4 mag bright galaxy of the Hubble type SB (0?) In the constellation of Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 84 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1949 .

Together with the galaxy PGC 214021 (also NGC 4640 B ), which is about ten times further away , it forms the optical galaxy pair Holm 446 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are the galaxies NGC 4641 , IC 810 , IC 3663 , IC 3710 .

The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on April 17, 1887 .
