NGC 4648 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E3 in the constellation Dragon in the northern sky . It is an estimated 69 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years across.

The object was discovered by William Herschel on November 22, 1797 .
