NGC 4647 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 61 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter. Under the catalog number VVC 1972 it is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster , a collection of over 2000 galaxies that are held together by their mutual attraction.
Together with Messier 60 ( NGC 4649 ) it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair ARP 116 , Holm 448 or KPG 353

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of elliptical galaxies close to spiral galaxies and disturbing them (Arp catalog) .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4637 , NGC 4638 , IC 3684 , IC 3698 .

The Type I supernova SN 1979A was observed here.

The object was discovered on March 15, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
