NGC 4638 = NGC 4667 is an 11.1 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation of Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 49 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 30,000 ly. The galaxy is listed under catalog number VVC 1938 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .

Together with NGC 4637 it forms a galaxy pair, it is the larger partner.
The galaxies NGC 4647 , NGC 4649 , IC 3665 , IC 3694 are located in the same area of the sky .

The object was first discovered on March 15, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope , who called it "a nebula"; at the second observation on April 17th of the same year he called her “faint”. These observations are listed as NGC 4638 while John Herschel's March 23, 1830 observation is listed as NGC 4667 .
