IC 18 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb pec in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is around 274 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 45,000 light years and a tidal tail 100,000 ly long . The galaxy and its elliptical companion IC 19 form an interactive pair that is registered as Arp 100 in the Arp catalog .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with an elliptical companion on one arm (Arp catalog) .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on August 31, 1892 .
