NGC 5953 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a with an active galaxy core in the constellation Snake north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 91 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 5954 it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 91 , KPG 468 or Holm 714 and together with NGC 5951 the galaxy trio KTG 62 . She is considered a member of the NGC 5962 group ( LGG 400 ).
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a large companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .
The object was discovered on April 17, 1784 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel .
