NGC 5954 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc / P with an active galaxy core in the constellation Snake north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 91 million light years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 5953 it forms the interacting galaxy pair Arp 91 , KPG 468 or Holm 714 and together with NGC 5951 the galaxy trio KTG 62 . She is considered a member of the NGC 5962 group ( LGG 400 ).

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a large companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .

The object was discovered on April 17, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
