NGC 5940 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Snake in the northern sky . It is an estimated 457 million light years from the Milky Way , has a disk diameter of about 110,000 ly, and is classified as a Seyfert 1 galaxy .
The object was discovered on April 19, 1887 by the astronomer Lewis A. Swift using his 16-inch reflector telescope and was later added to his New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer .
