NGC 5936 is an active bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type "SBb" in the constellation Snake in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 182 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter.

The Type-Iax- Supernova SN 2013dh was observed here.

The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “F, not S, iF, r”.
