NGC 5923 is a 12.9 mag barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Bear Guardian and about 254 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered by John Herschel on May 1, 1828 . However, it is possible that John Herschel only repeated the discovery of his father Wilhelm here . He had noted a galaxy with an appropriate description, which is now listed under NGC 5922 as a star observation, because the positional error for Wilhelm Herschel's observations would be unusually high.
