NGC 5956 is a 12.5 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sc with an active galaxy core in the constellation Snake north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 87 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter. Together with three other galaxies, it is considered a member of the NGC 5970 group ( LGG 401 ). In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5957 , NGC 5970 , IC 1131 .

The object was discovered on April 29, 1865 by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest .
