IC 1131 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Serpens north of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 93 million light years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with NGC 5970 .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 5957 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on June 29, 1891 .
