NGC 5971 is a 13.8 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa with an active galaxy core in the constellation Dragon in the northern sky . It is an estimated 200 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 5963 and NGC 5965, the optical galaxy trio KTG 63 . The galaxies NGC 5969 and PGC 2544663 lie in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on August 5, 1885 .
