NGC 5996 is a 12.5 mag bright spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type Sc in the constellation Snake north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 151 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 75,000 ly. The galaxy is in gravitational interaction with NGC 5994 , with which it forms the constellation Arp 72 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a small companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .

The galaxies IC 1135 and IC 1142 are located in the same area of the sky .

The Type Ia supernova candidate ASASSN -15db was observed here.

The object was discovered on March 21, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “pF, S, r, preceding two pretty bright stars”.
