NGC 5987 is an 11.9 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Dragon in the northern sky . It is an estimated 142 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 170,000 light years in diameter . The galaxy is a member of the NGC 5982 group , which also includes NGC 5976 , NGC 5981 , NGC 5985, and NGC 5989 .
The object was discovered on May 25, 1788 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “pF, cS”.
