NGC 5991 is a 14.0 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type S in the constellation Snake in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 308 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 90,000 ly. a. the galaxy IC 4583 .
The object was discovered on June 13, 1879 by Édouard Stephan .
