NGC 5988 is a 14.2 likes bright spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type Scd in the constellation Serpens the northern sky . It is estimated to be 476 million light years from the Milky Way and about 170,000 light years in diameter .
The object was discovered by Lewis A. Swift on April 17, 1887 .
