NGC 5994 is a 14.8 mag bright barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Snake and about 155 million light years from the Milky Way. It is in gravitational interaction with NGC 5996 , with it forms the constellation Arp 72 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a small companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .
The galaxy was discovered on March 9, 1851 by Bindon Stoney , an assistant to William Parsons .
